What if I never received a notice?
It is the obligation of the vehicle owner to report a change of address on the vehicle registration to their Department of Motor Vehicles within 30 days. All ERT notices are sent to the legal registered address as found in the DMV.
What if I sold my vehicle?
Even if you sold your vehicle, you may still be considered its owner until the title is transferred out of your name by the new owner or until you submit a motor vehicle transfer notification. If this was not done timely, you will be held responsible for the toll violations.
What if I wasn't driving the vehicle at the time of the toll violations?
The registered owner of the vehicle is responsible for payment of the specified tolls and fees in accordance with VA Code 46.2-819.3:1.
What if my license plate was stolen/lost?
You will need to provide documentation showing the date the lost/stolen license plates were reported to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
What if I already paid?
Please provide proof that the payment of the toll and fees was made prior to the violation being sent for collections. To provide proof, mail a copy of the front and back of your check, or credit card receipt, showing your payment.
What if I have an account?
If you have an established E-ZPass account, it is possible your account did not have funds in it to cover the tolls for which you were billed or the vehicle was not listed on the account. To provide proof of a valid account, mail a copy of E-ZPass account statement for the time period of the tolls showing the vehicle being listed and the account being properly funded.
What if I have never traveled through the Downtown or Midtown tunnels?
An image of the vehicle taken at the time of the violation occurrence will be reviewed to confirm whether the plate was misread or not.
What if my ex-spouse was assigned the vehicle in our divorce decree?
A copy of the divorce decree will need to be provided indicating the vehicle was assigned to your ex-spouse before the violations were incurred by the vehicle or that the ex-spouse was assigned all debts, including toll violations, incurred by the vehicle.
